• Project Description: The U.S. Geological Survey is responsible for the design, development and maintenance of The National Atlas website (http://www.nationalatlas.gov ). The nationalatlas.gov website is an electronic atlas that shows us where we are with an interface designed to explore and discover data and facts about the United States. The map maker currently hosts approximately 3000 GIS data layers for query and display on-line. • Description of Student Services: Services may include one or more of the following activities: Assistance in software development and programming for geospatial data query, display and visualization on the web through the National Atlas of the United States™; assistance with developing reports and presentations to demonstrate project progress; assistance with testing and validation of software under development; and assistance with documenting program code, and writing associated documentation to support the code developed. • Required Expertise, Skills, Education and/or Experience: Completion of three or more years of college level academic course work and some knowledge/experience with the programming language of Java, JavaScript, Ruby, C++ or C# is required. Good English writing skills and attention to detail are required. Some knowledge of SQL or Microsoft Access is desired. Some knowledge of Microsoft Excel is desired. Some knowledge of ArcGIS or AutoCAD is desired. 3. Description of Working Conditions: Software development and data entry is sedentary work which will require extended periods of time working at a computer terminal. Student will be required to interact with USGS and EPA staff, other Federal and university scientists, and other students. 4. Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with the level of education and experience, as follows: Salary is commensurate with course work and experience. Salary includes the cost of self-employment taxes for social security and Medicare. The student is responsible for all costs of transportation to and from the principal duty station location. The Government does not provide housing, meals or other living expenses while working at the principal duty station. Travel away from the duty station is not expected. 5.
