IGERT Ecosystem Informatics is an emerging field that integrates ecosystem science, computer science, and mathematics and is funded by the National Science Foundation. The objectives of the Ecosystem Informatics program at Oregon State University are to (1) train young scientists who will make basic contributions to ecosystem science, computer science, and mathematics; (2) promote discovery in ecosystem science, computer science, and mathematics through team-based research and education; and (3) further ecosystem and natural resources management and policy. Click here for full presentation of slides (in pdf) above created by Phoebe Zarnetske, Eco-IGERT student. Four Program Areas Carbon cycling, climate, climate change, fire: Decomposition, Growth and Mortality, Carbon Dynamics of forests, and Airshed dynamics. Community stability and resilience, disease, invasion: Vector-borne disease, Epidemiology, and Invasive species. Hydrology, streams, network dynamics: Hydrology, River restoration and engineering, Benthic macroinvertebrates, and Sediment transport. Wildlife and changing landscapes, streamscapes, and seascapes: Ecosystem consequences of land-use change, Marine Geography, Modeling demographic processes, Seafloor Mapping, and Species distribution modeling Why is Ecosystem Informatics important? As we delve into the Twenty-first century many problems such as disease transmission, species invasion, climate change, natural hazards, and species extinctions still elude us. Students in our Ecosystem Informatics Ph.D. program will develop innovative solutions to these key problems and others by blending the sciences and working on interdisciplinary team intended Audience. This IGERT program is intended for students in mathematics, computer science, and the ecosystem sciences who seek a career in research and/or management of wildlife, fisheries, forests, agricultural systems, natural hazards (earthquakes, flood, fire), and conservation and restoration of native ecosystems. Graduates of this program will be well-prepared for positions in local, state, federal, and international agencies and universities. Areas of research in computer science include knowledge representation and reasoning, Bayesian network models, machine learning and data mining, graphics and visualization, programming languages for ecosystem modeling, and software engineering for supporting model development and validations. Oregon State University is a strong research institution, nurturing the minds of great alumni such as Linus Pauling. OSU is home to many natural resource agencies, and is the lead institution for the HJ Andrews Forest Long-term ecological research site, whose majestic forests and clear streams are emblematic of the Pacific Northwest. OSU is one of only three land-, sea-, and space-grant institutions in the United States. Located in the beautiful Willamette Valley of Corvallis, Oregon (rated one of the ten best places to live in the nation), OSU is known for its one-on-one attention to students and has been voted one of the friendliest campuses in the United States. OSU has a strong commitment to diversity:
