Assistantships

Many graduate students with good academic records are supported by assistantships. Assistantships pay all tuition and a stipend for students enrolled in graduate studies in return for teaching, or research, work. When applying to the Department of Geosciences, students do not need to complete a separate application for assistantships. Simply answer the questions on assistantships in the main application (bottom of page one), and faculty will consider you for a teaching and/or research assistantship.

The Geosciences Department has extensive teaching responsibilities and graduate students play an important role in the instructional program. Since English proficiency is required for successful teaching. Students graduating from English medium colleges and university have a strong competitive advantage for teaching assistantships. Our department has high expectations and guidelines that are expected to be followed by our teaching assistants.

Geosciences faculty have active research programs and graduate students are hired with research assistantships to support this work. Students who are interested in research assistantships are strongly encouraged to look at the web pages of the professors in the areas they would like to work in for more information and instructions. It is strongly recommended that newly admitted students spend some time talking with each of the faculty members.

Graduate students often come with nationally competitive fellowships that can be used at the graduate program of their choice. Although the National Science Foundation supports some of these awards, an ever changing list of fellowship sources provide other opportunities. Prospective students are encouraged to do a google search for graduate fellowships to identify non-OSU sources of support for graduate studies.

To be considered for other types of financial aid, write directly to the Oregon State Financial Aid Office.
