Things we learned at GIS Day

 

GIS stands for Geographical Information System

You can make maps of almost everything

How to use GPS

GPS stands for Global Positioning System

Lots of companies use GIS/GPS

You need at least 3 or 4 satellites for GPS to work

GIS involves computers, cameras, satellites, and GPS

There are 24 GPS satellites in space

Monitor number fish in the stream

14,000 meters

How to make a map on the computer

Cities grow a lot in 10 years

How to map using GIS

It cost lots of money to replace signs (Up to $100)

Satellites take pictures of the earth

GIS is used by foresters, city workers, policemen

A GPS uses satellite waves

Maps can be 3-D or flat

People can find where to replace signs using a hand held computer

Salmon migrate from fresh to ocean and back-this can be mapped

Ashland was bigger than Medford in 1910, but itıs smaller now

GPS must face north to work

Lots of parking meters- mapped
