  1. Kids' Keynote Presentation by George Taylor, Oregon Climate Service
    • GIS and its Use in Science, Education, and Decision-Making
    • 11:15-12:00, Austin Auditorium, LaSells-Stewart Ctr, open to the public
    • George H. Taylor is the State Climatologist for Oregon, and a faculty member at Oregon State University's College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences. He manages the Oregon Climate Service, the state repository of weather and climate information, and supervises a staff of ten. Mr. Taylor is past president of the American Association of State Climatologists. He is a member of the American Meteorological Society and has received certification as a Certified Consulting Meteorologist by the Society. He also has a California Lifetime Community College Credential. He has published over 200 reports, symposium articles, and journal articles. Prior to joining Oregon State University in 1989, Mr. Taylor operated his own consulting business in Santa Barbara, California. Previously he was employed as a meteorologist by North American Weather Consultants and Environmental Research and Technology. He holds a B.A. in Mathematics from UCSB and an M.S. in Meteorology from the University of Utah.

    • Seeing the Forest and the Trees: Harnessing GIS to Map Forests of the Pacific Northwest

    • Janet Ohmann is a research forest ecologist with the Pacific Northwest Research Station, USFS, in Corvallis. She's a Beaver, holding a PhD in forest ecology from OSU, also MF (forestry) and BA (botany) degrees from Duke University. She has been with PNW since 1981--first at the Portland Lab, and in Corvallis since 1995. Her research focuses on understanding and mapping broad-scale patterns and dynamics of plant communities and species in western forests. Her greatest kicks come from seeing this information used in addressing real-world problems in conservation planning and natural resource management.

  3. Demonstrations, Maps - Richardson Hall, 2nd Floor Knuckle
    • 2:00-3:00 and 4:00-5:00 - "Vendor Fair" and demos - Local businesses in Corvallis and units on the OSU campus will share and demo their GIS products, projects, and related technologies (e.g., GPS). There will also be information on current GIS internship opportunities for OSU students.

  4. GPS Hike for ~420 local Corvallis middle-schoolers and their teachers
    • Several routes across the south side of campus around Reser Stadium and other buildings, in groups led by an OSU student or staffer with a Garmin GPS receiver

  6. Presentations at local schools by OSU grad student Michelle Kinzel
    The goal of these events is to educate kids about how geography, through the technology of GIS, affects their everyday lives, and to prepare those participating on the GPS hike at OSU for their adventure.

  7. "Let Them Eat (GIS) Cake!"
    Spatially-scrumptuous treats will be prepared for the GIS Day Bake-Off on Tuesday, November 13th, Department of Geosciences, Wilkinson Hall. Proceeds to benefit the Geosciences Club and prizes awarded for best GIS design, best GIS theme and others.
