GEOG 300
Make-up Work/Extra Credit

--Make-up Work/Extra credit this term will usually consist of attending presentations related to Environmental and/or sustainability issues, as well as some volunteer work I will identify appropriate options as I become aware of them. If you know of something coming up, let me know and I will consider including it.

Unless otherwise noted, each Makeup Work/Extra Credit option is worth 10 points. The options are available to anyone. There is a class limit of 40 extra credit points (excluding points for reusing paper for assignments). To receive the extra credit points, you must follow the instructions noted with each one.

Also, all volunteer work is on a first come/first served basis. There are no guarantees that volunteer opportunities are available. Contact the person noted.

The speaker's name, topic, time, and signature of organizer and place of the presentation must be clearly written on the notes. It is also necessary to have a signature for volunteer work, indicating the number of hours you worked. Turn ALL MU/EC work into Steve Cook--in lecture Quiz Fodders is best or in the box outside my office, WLKN 140.

All Extra Credit write-ups must be turned in within ten days of the event.

Everything for credit in Geog 300 MUST have: Your Name; TA Name; Recitation Time and Date and Title of Event or it will not be recorded

Volunteers from the church, the larger Corvallis community and from an OSU class on sustainability make this possible. Since September 2008, we have made over 9500 jars of jams and jellies. We meet most Monday nights between 5 and 8 in the FUMC Community Center Kitchen on the corner of 12th and Jackson in Corvallis. "Forest Habitat Restoration"
OSU College Forests needs to fight the scourge of the forest know as Himalayan blackberry, and restore the forest to its former glory! HBB readily invades riparian areas, forest edges, oak woodlands, meadows, roadsides, clear-cuts and any other relatively open area, including all open forest types. Once it becomes well established, HBB out competes low stature native vegetation and can prevent establishment of shade intolerant trees leading to the formation of permanent HBB thickets with little other vegetation present. The resulting dense thickets can limit movement of large animals from meadow to forest and vice versa, reducing the utility of small openings and meadows as foraging areas. Although the fruit is widely consumed by native animals, and some butterflies use HBB, it is a poor functional replacement for a diverse native forest understory, meadow or riparian floodplain.

Clean Energy Jobs Lobby Day! in Salem This is a carbon cap and trade bill.
Take advantage of an excellent opportunity to advocate for the environment directly to your elected officials! On Monday, February 12, ASOSU Environmental Affairs will be leading a group of students to Salem to lobby for the Clean Energy Jobs Bill. This bill will institute a cap and trade carbon permit system throughout the state of Oregon and lower the state’s total emissions limit in the future. Needless to say, it is one of the most important and consequential pieces of environmental legislation Oregon has ever had, and that’s why we need OSU students to be a part of it!!!

Transportation to the capitol and lunch will be provided for this event. You may drive yourself if you prefer, but transportation costs will not be reimbursed. Check in will be on the 2nd floor of the MICAH Building at 680 State Street (across from the First United Methodist Church) in Salem at 9:00 am. After lunch and a rally, students will begin meetings with elected representatives about why they care about the Clean Energy Jobs Bill and how it will impact them.

Want to participate but haven’t lobbied before? Not to worry! Lobby training will be provided by Renew Oregon prior to the lobby day on February 7th in the Student Involvement Lounge (SEC 112), and February 8th in STAG 111, both at 5:00pm. We recommend taking this opportunity to learn to be effective talking to your legislators, and both sessions cover the same things, so you only need to attend one. Additionally, an info session about carbon pricing in general and this bill in particular will be hosted by Coral Avery and Zac Pinard on February 5th at 5:00 pm in the Student Involvement Lounge (SEC 112).

Please email asosu.environmental@oregonstate.edu if you are interested, to receive updates about the trip, and sign up on Facebook and the Renew Oregon website. Any questions can be directed to Zac Pinard at asosu.environmental@oregonstate.edu.

Jammin' for the Hungry
Volunteers meet weekly to make jam for local food banks.
Jammin' for the Hungry provides an extra "treat" to food bank customers to go with the USDA peanut butter provided. Each week, we make jams and jellies for Corvallis-area food banks in our commercial kitchen. We make both low-sugar and sugar free jams – a healthy alternative to traditional sugar-laden fruit spreads. Fruit and all ingredients are provided by local donations and from Linn Benton Food Share. No experience necessary and volunteers get free samples and make new friends! Email saragpower@gmail.com to check that we are not on vacation the night you want to come.

"Effects of hypoxia on marine biodiversity"
Abstract:
Coastal hypoxia is a mounting problem worldwide that has been recognised as a major threat to marine coastal biota. The decline in dissolved oxygen can affect the structure and functioning of ecosystems, causing death and catastrophic changes. Hypoxia is forecast to increase owing to the combined effects of the continued spread of coastal eutrophication and global warming. Global warming will contribute to decrease the global average dissolved oxygen in the oceans worldwide, and may also affect the oxygen requirements of marine benthic macrofauna. A broad comparative analysis across a range of contrasting marine benthic organisms showed that hypoxia thresholds vary greatly across marine organisms and that the conventional definition of 2 mg O2/L to designate waters as hypoxic is below the empirical sub-lethal and lethal oxygen thresholds for half of the species tested. Environmental factors can aggravate the negative consequences of oxygen depletion for marine organisms. Particularly, the presence of sulphide and warming can further reduce oxygen thresholds for marine organisms. Both environmental factors show a negative impact on survival of marine benthic communities under hypoxia and suggest that the threats derived from hypoxia to marine biodiversity are greater than anticipated on the basis of the direct effects of low oxygen concentration alone. These results imply that the number and area of coastal ecosystems affected by hypoxia and the future extent of hypoxia impacts on marine life have been generally underestimated. Keywords: Hypoxia, marine biodiversity, global warming, eutrophication

Stories from 60 Years of Ocean Science
We used to think that the oceans are unchanging and inexhaustible. After all, they are vast, covering 70 percent of the Earth, and the forces that drive them dwarf human endeavor. But today, in the course of a single human lifetime, our view has fundamentally changed, thanks largely to scientists who have explored oceanographic realms. Researchers at Oregon State University have documented life forms, invented new ways to the see below the surface of the sea and found ways to protect ocean ecosystems and to serve human well-being. OSU scientists are using this knowledge to fashion a new relationship to the ocean, one that values its bounty and beauty. On February 24, hear from some of those who led the way and others who are still on the front lines of this urgent work. Sponsored by the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences
