GEO 300
Make-up Work/Extra Credit

Make-up Work/Extra credit this term will usually consist of attending presentations related to Environmental and/or sustainability issues, as well as some volunteer work. I will identify appropriate presentations as I become aware of them. If you know of something coming up, let me know and I will consider including it.

Unless otherwise noted, each Extra Credit option is worth 10 points. The options are available to anyone. There is a class limit of 40 extra credit points (excluding points for reusing paper for assignments). To receive the extra credit points, you must follow the instructions noted with each one.
Also, all volunteer work is on a first come/first served basis. There are no guarantees that volunteer opportunities are available. Contact the person noted.

For any presentations that occur in small settings, e.g. classrooms, you must have your notes signed by the responsible person/event organizer at end of the presentation, and turned into Steve Cook.

The speaker's name, topic, time, and place of the presentation must be clearly written on the notes. It is also necessary to have a signature for volunteer work, indicating the number of hours you worked. Turn ALL MU/EC work into Steve Cook directly.

All Extra Credit write-ups must be given to Steve Cook within a week of the event. Everything turned in for Geo 300 MUST have: Your Name TA Name; and Recitation Time or it will not be recorded

There isn't much here yet, but things will be added as I hear of them.

SCIENCE LECTURE:ESCAPING THE BANANA DEAD END: How monoculture trumps organics, fair-trade, and genetic engineering.
Food for Thought: A lecture on issues in Biotechnology. Brought to you by the College of Agricultural Sciences.
Dan Koeppel is a writer and journalist who has published stories on nature, sports, the outdoors, and technology in national magazines such as National Geographic Adventure, Popular Science, e New York Times Magazine, Wired, and Outside. Dan’s book, “Banana fate of the fruit that changed the world” is about the troubled fate of one of the most important fruits in the world. Millions of people depend on bananas, not just as lunchbox treats, but for their basic nutritional needs. But now, disease is ravaging this ubiquitous - but strangely vulnerable - crop. "Banana" chronicles this history of the fruit, explaining why it has been so important, why the business of bananas has been so checkered (and sometimes even deadly), and most importantly, what makes the fruit weak - and what might make it strong again.
