Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Geosciences provides a welcoming home for undergraduates interested in the study of the earth and human interaction with the environment through majors in geography, geology and earth science.
Majors
The program in geography emphasizes the earth's land surfaces and people's interaction with the earth. The program in geology is concerned with the internal and external processes of the earth over time. These two programs merge in broad areas relating to surficial processes, remote sensing, earth resources and the application of computers to natural and man made phenomena. The earth science program combines aspects of both programs.
Minors and Certificates
Minors and certificates are programs of study totalling at least 27 credit hours. A complete list of minors and certificates is available in the OSU online catalog. The Department of Geosciences offers the following minors and certificates.
The environmental geosciences minor is designed to provide an earth science dimension to the education of students interested in environmentally related fields of study. It combines the study of geography, geology and management policy.
The geography minor provides a means for non-majors to explore how the Earth works, the people who live on its surface, the value of accessing and properly using geographic information, and how to bring concepts of relative location, pattern and spatial process to bear on key societal questions.
The geology minor adds a solid background in geology to majors from a wide variety of disciplines.
The undergraduate geographic information science certificate is designed for students seeking to develop computer-based technical and analytical skills in cartography, remote sensing and geographic information systems.
Additional information for students considering majors in the Department of Geosciences is available in the department office. Please stop by the department office (104 Wilkinson Hall), call 541-737-1201 or email geo-info@geo.oregonstate.edu with any questions you have.
