EXTENDING THE OUTREACH OF THIS COLLECTION
The Oregon State University mineral and crystal collection is displayed in the Department of Geosciences to support instructional programs in mineralogy and related subjects. The display is also viewed by school children, students and faculty from other units on campus, and by the visiting public. By use of our web site, thousands of people from all over the world study the collection each year.
Because all of the specimens have been contributed by alumni and friends, because all curation efforts are volunteered, and because no state funds are available for these efforts, we are in desperate need of your support to improve the collection and to extend its impact.
Many alumni and friends have extended financial contributions to a fund that supports our efforts to enlarge the collection. This helps us to improve our instructional programs in mineralogy, geochemistry, lithology, and ore deposits by illustrating special mineral textures, unusual crystal forms, and important mineral associations. When our mineral collection is enlarged by purchase or by direct gift of suitable specimens from private holdings, the donor (or whomever is specified) is recognized on display labels and by inclusion in our web-based digital museum. Of course, all contributions that help us to reach these goals become tax deductible.
If an exceptional sample or an entire collection is to be contributed, please make contact with the Chairperson, Department of Geological Sciences, 104 Wilkinson Hall, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331-5506. A professional appraisal can be arranged if required for tax purposes.
If funds can be contributed to enlarge the collection, a check can be made out to OSU FOUNDATION with Geosciences Mineral Collection, Acct# 69170 added to the memo line and sent to Mineralogy Collection, Department of Geosciences, 104 Wilkinson Hall, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR 97331-5506 or a bequest can be made directly on the internet to the OSU Foundation.
